The name Morinji is derived from Morinji Temple in Gunma Prefecture. One day when my daughter came home from nursery school, she said that she had learned that the raccoon dogs at Morinji are good at transforming themselves into other things, and she had also learned how to play a yokai monster card game. The raccoon dog monster was the one from the folktale “Bunbuku Chagama,” and the temple also has its roots in the same raccoon dog. I was fascinated by the idea that yokai can change their shape and also by the sound of the word morinji, so I replaced the original characters with a phonetic equivalent.
This work is a collage of objects placed on a square timber support. In addition to being related to each other, the objects expand the scope of the work. Then the work expands the viewer’s imagination. Fantasy is an indispensable element in my work. Fantasy expands the minds of those who see it, and I also hope that my work will expands the world of your imagination.
