This time I decided to take a trip on a flying carpet. The work is set in 1980. What makes a journey like this exciting for me is that it arises form the emotions and values that I discover in the course of researching and coming up with a plan for a given era. In addition to making the people and the clothes, I create the entire space all by myself – from the makeup and hairstyles to the wallpaper and baseboards. Then, all of the time and space that I have created over a three-year period is captured in a single photograph with a shutter speed of 1/60 second. As with the time and space, people can probably only see what they want to see and come up their own histories. After the shoot, I display the film set under the project name, “Idol’s Noban Ceremonial First Pitch.” This title is designed to get people to click on the internet, and while it’s an interesting psychological game, it also provides us with insight into the perspective of Japanese men. The work approaches gender from that viewpoint.
