Atsushi WATANABE (I'm here project)

Born 1978 in Kanagawa, live in Kanagawa
2009 M.F. Painting Major, the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Graduate School of Tokyo University of the Arts.

Contemporary artist/social activist. Since his university days, he has dealt critically with events and situations that are based on direct or indirect experience and may be considered taboo or defiled by society through project-based work. Despite his experience as a serious hikikomori after graduation, he recovered and has since continued to vigorously engage in his activities.
He deals with themes such as relationship issues around loneliness and isolation, the possibilities and impossibilities of empathy, and the state of social inclusion. Since 2018, he has been leading the “I’m here project” and has conducted numerous collaborative projects with people who face difficulties in their lives and hold trauma, who are often made invisible.
He is pursuing the possibility of art intervening physically and mentally in addressing social problems and exerting direct effects on their resolutions. As an activist, he is actively involved in advocacy and care work, with many media appearances and speaking engagements.
