KAJI Seiya
Born 1996 in Niigata, Live in Niigata
2018 Nagaoka Institute of Design, Department of Art and Craft
Graduated from the Department of Art and Craft at Nagaoka Institute of Design.
While still a student, he produced works for numerous communities. After graduation, he worked at Takashi Murakami’s studio before establishing an independent practice creating life-sized animal sculptures from reclaimed materials. He currently operates “sokoso-ko,” a studio based in Tochio, Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, which regularly hosts open-studio events and other programs. Using discarded wood obtained from construction companies, restaurants, and other local businesses, he carries forward the traces of human activity embedded within the material, transforming it into animals that seem alive—with blood coursing through their veins, muscles in motion, and fur stirred by the wind. Drawing on techniques inherited from a grandfather who was a carpenter, together with meticulously calculated skeletal proportions, he achieves both exceptional structural strength and refined sculptural beauty.
