MATSUI Shota

MATSUI Shota
Born in 1994 in Kyoto, live in Kyoto, Japan
BFA in Sculpture, Kyoto City University of Arts(2018)
He creates sculptural works using unaltered stones collected from mountains and rivers, with a
strong interest in their natural beauty, weight, and material presence. Engaging with gravity,
mass, and support as unavoidable conditions of sculpture, he explores moments in which
gravity becomes visually perceptible through the balance between stone and supporting
structures.
His practice is informed by an interest in suiseki, the traditional culture of appreciating stones,
and through the use of contemporary materials, he reconsiders the relationship between stone
and space, presenting new ways of seeing and experiencing stone.
