SHOGEN Ryoji

Born 1994 in Hyogo, Live in Osaka
2017 Osaka University of Arts Crafts Department

He creates sculptural works in iron.
Born to a ceramic artist in Hyogo Prefecture, he grew up surrounded by clay from an early age, while also developing a strong interest in animation.
Recognizing a common sculptural sensibility in clay and iron, the artist became fascinated by the intangible sensation of molding the boundary between natural and artificial forms.
Through the process of making, he came to recognize that each action, choice, and sensation contributes to the formation of the self. This realization led to an ongoing exploration of what it means to be human. In recent years, he has created a series of iron girls informed by three interconnected perspectives: iron as a material that has transformed humanity from a naturally occurring existence into an artificially generated one; the act of working with iron as both a means of self-inquiry and a sensory process through which the body is formed; and uncertain images of humanity shaped by Japanese animation culture, where encounters with the values and perspectives of others are part of everyday experience. Through these works, he seeks glimpses of a humanity that remains in the process of becoming—continually questioning itself and renewing its values.
