In 2001, Tanada stayed in Berlin, Germany, as an overseas research fellow of the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and later undertook residency-based production in different cultural contexts, including Bandung, Indonesia, and Singapore in 2015. His practice has consistently centered on wood carving, and he continues to sculpt human figures using the traditional Japanese technique of ichiboku-zukuri, carving from a single block of wood. Working in close dialogue with a single piece of wood, he confronts the time and memory embedded in the material, as well as the qualities and subtle fluctuations of living wood. His works quietly emerge in the spaces between various boundaries—those between adulthood and childhood, humanity and nature, and the individual and society. Within them lies an open margin where viewers’ own experiences and sensibilities gently converge, and within their stillness resides a sense of boundless expanse.
