Animation plays a key role in understanding the “magic” of cinema. This magic occurs when visible frames align with the invisible in-betweens in our minds, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the world of moving images.
The moving image is a collaboration between what is seen and what remains unseen. My ongoing research explores the mental mechanisms behind this magic, which happens through the interaction between the eye and the animation frames. Can the systems and tools of frame-by-frame animation offer insights into perception, understanding, and consciousness?
