UEDA Mayu

Born in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, where she lives
2000 M.F.A. Ceramics, Osaka University of Arts

UEDA Mayu creates ceramic artworks featuring vibrant colors and organic forms, exhibiting them both in Japan and abroad.
Her 'A Garden of Feelings' series uses 'Garden' as a metaphor for the mindscape that appears in her mind. In her 'A Lump of Feelings' series, stone and clay represent a mass of emotion, fired together. This series incorporates granite (stone), which she believes protected her after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995. The 'Animals,’ 'Fruits,’ and 'Homes' series were inspired by her artist-in-residence program.
She also participated in the activities of C.A.P., an art NPO, and was involved in the launch of the C.A.P. Clay Studio. Mayu later established Mayu Studio, her ceramics studio, at the foot of Mt. Rokko, which includes an outdoor space for pit firing and raku firing.
A deep respect for nature forms the basis of her work, which has been nurtured in the Rokko Mountains and is reflected in her ceramics. Rokko is an integral part of her daily life and identity.
