Wolfgang Winter and Berthold Hörbelt have been working together as an artist team for over 30 years. Under the names Winter/Hoerbelt, they have become known for their site-specific, often walk-in objects and large installations, with which they rethink the concept of sculpture.
In their works, they consistently question the role of sculpture in the interplay between independent artwork and usable object. The two artists prefer to use everyday and industrially manufactured materials. These are removed from their actual use and translated into other contexts. An interaction that can be functional in a broader sense, but also completely purposeless, and in which the aim is to examine the peculiarities of material materials and see them in a new light. In addition to aesthetic contemplation, the two artists deliberately give the viewer the opportunity to physically experience the sculptures and installations. The artworks form an open framework within which visitors are given the freedom to decide whether and how they engage with the objects.
In the meantime, the two sculptors have shown their work at world-famous art exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale, Skulptur Projekte Münster, the Yokohama Triennale and the Liverpool Biennale and have realized over 80 works in public spaces. In the past three years, impressive works have been realized, including two large outdoor sculptures for the University of Cambridge, but also in the Rhine-Main region, such as the monumental installation “Die große Illusion” for the roof of the Kunstverein Frankfurt, the “Blaue Kran” in Offenbach and the Basso Relievo “Vertieft-Erhaben”, for an administrative building of the City of Frankfurt. Her works can be found in numerous collections. These include the collections of the Westfälisches Landesmuseum Münster, the ZKM Karlsruhe, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Great Britain, Laura Braggion in Padua, Freshfields, Bruckhaus & Deringer in Düsseldorf, the KFW Bankengruppe Frankfurt, the Fachhochschule Frankfurt, the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt, the Umedalen Sculpture Park in Sweden and the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg.
