ZHOU Yiqiao
Born 1995 in China, live in Kyoto.
2024 Urushi Lacquering Doctor’s degree of Kyoto City University of Arts
Through repeated representations of particular figures rooted in different cultures, she aims to create works that express the intriguing and contradictory aspects of fragmented cultural phenomena in our daily lives. In recent years, she has been working with symbols such as “orchid fingers” and “peony” in various materials, including lacquer, surface paintings, and balloons.
For example, the Chinese “orchid fingers” motif and hand gesture were not initially defined by gender, but over a long cultural transition, they evolved from the Buddha’s mudra to a symbol of femininity. She feels that this gesture liberates the shackles of gender from the constraints of the body, and through the “orchid fingers” symbol, she strives to convey the contradictions of gender that are deeply rooted, especially in certain cultural backgrounds.
