nl/rokko project
In 2022 the team of Rokkonomad started the nl/rokko project while based on Mt.Rokko, (primarily lead by KOIZUMI Hiroaki and Lok Jansen).
nl/rokko is a series of projects that invites viewers to (re-) think different current topics related to work, growth and environment by contemplating individual human interests, society and finite resources. With cooperation from the Embassy of the Netherlands, they work as members of the “nl/local project - Creating our future with the Netherlands” that brings the Netherlands and Japan together to take on social issues.
In the fall of 2022, they held a Zine Walk, entitled “New Ways of Working / Life in a Post-Capitalist Era,” where participants walked through Mt. Rokko and contemplated the four themes of work, different organization structures, the circular economy, and the idea of “commons”. They exhibited at Rokko Meets Art 2023 Beyond and created an installation that gathered opinions from participants who considered the question “What is growth?” while in the forest. In 2024, they exhibited the prize winning project “Symbiosis: Learning Collaborative Strategies And Interdependencies From Other Species.” Here nl/rokko researched different collaborative strategies of lichen, mycelium, plants, insects, and other life forms in the forests of Mt. Rokko. The resulting art piece served as a fertile ground for these symbiotic relations - the art was stitched on a piece of fabric laid in earth, which allowed viewers to observe the art slowly being eaten by bacteria and insects. The final piece was overgrown by small plant matter and teaming with new life, a gesture of giving up and giving back to nature by the artists.
